Snaffle Travel has a tour planned to CHIO Aachen Equestrian Festival in 2023.
The CHIO Aachen is one of the best equestrian events in the world. Each year, about 360,000 spectators follow the competitions in five disciplines over the ten days of the event.
Aachen is the westernmost city of Germany, near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands, 61 km (38 mi) west-southwest of Cologne.
The competition attracts the worlds best competitors
The world’s best equestrian athletes attend the competitions in Aachen each year – in jumping, dressage, eventing, four-in-hand driving and vaulting. “In the world of horse sport, Aachen is simply the greatest, it is what all work towards”, says the three-time winner of the ROLEX Grand Prix of Aachen and five-time Olympic Jumping Champion Ludger Beerbaum. And Bettina Hoy, Team World Eventing Champion, describes the competitions in Aachen as “riding with goose bumps”.
A meeting place for not just equestrians
The CHIO Aachen is the most popular meeting place for celebrities from politics, economy and show business. Numerous families groups and horse sport fans make it a yearly outing celebrating their favourite competitions in the stadiums. Both cross-country and the marathon courses bring the local crowds from far and wide like a folk festival.
A list of equestrian sporting legends have competed here
The sports legends of the past decades have already achieved this: Hans Günter Winkler and Josef Neckermann, Nelson Pessoa, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, Michael Freund and Isabell Werth. “You must have won at Aachen to be someone in the equestrian sport world”, says Winkler – the most successful jumping rider of all times.
