Travelling to the UK – ETA
Australians must now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the United Kingdom, as part of the UK’s efforts to enhance border security.
The ETA scheme, first introduced in November last year, has now been extended to include travellers from non-European countries, including Australia. Under this scheme, those who do not require a visa to visit the UK must secure an ETA before their trip.
From 8 January 2025, obtaining an ETA will be mandatory. By April 2025, all travellers, including children, will need an ETA to enter the UK.
The ETA costs £10 (approximately A$20) and allows multiple visits to the UK for stays of up to six months within a two-year period or until the traveller’s passport expires. Applications can be submitted through the UK ETA app, with approvals typically processed within three working days and linked directly to the traveller’s passport.

Important: Airlines may request proof of your ETA approval before boarding. Be sure to carry confirmation of your ETA, as failure to provide evidence may result in denied boarding.
